Donkey Kong first appeared as a Nintendo game character back in 1981. Two theories attempt to explain the origin of the video game’s name:

1. During production, some form of miscommunication led the game to be named Donkey Kong instead of its intended name “Monkey Kong.”

or…

2. His inventor, Shigeru Miyamoto, named the video game “Donkey Kong” to suggest stubborness (donkey) and gorilla-like imagery (Kong).

My personal theory is that the name implied “stupid gorilla” as opposed to “stubborn”, since Donkey Kong fights with braun instead of brains. But whatever the case, Donkey Kong is the name of the muscular, 800 pound gorilla that we know and love today.

Game Description

In the classic arcade game, Donkey Kong plays a meddlesome, antagonist gorilla. At the beginning of the game, he is seen kidnapping Pauline (Mario’s girlfriend) and taking her atop a metal fortress to be held a prisioner. Mario, who desperately wants his girlfriend back, has one job to do…save his girlfriend. Thus the object of the game is to get Mario past ramps, up ladders, and over rumbling barrels to avoid casualty and save Pauline.

The game is simple, as games were back in 1981, but is rather challenging to improve your score with every play.

Player’s Guide

In round one, develop advanced technologies for stronger weaponry (rockets, infantry, intelligence, warheads, and bioloads) and increase your cashflow by drawing resources from the ground. Then after technologies are developed, begin your production of anti-weapons for defense. You will need these to ward off rocket and fighter jet attacks.

Next, enhance propaganda by developing your media’s broadcasting capabilities. This will allow you to steal citizens from opposing countries and limit the number of citizens who can be lured away from your own.

Then begin production on warheads and bionuclear missles. By combining propaganda or ground forces (direct attacks) with planned attacks, you can really whittle down your enemies’ population. This, in turn, makes it more difficult for your opponents to develop resources and plan further attacks against you.

As well, several times during the game world leaders will contact you to form diplomancy (a truce). Accepting their diplomatic agreement is your choice, but keep in mind, this can prevent lost turns by freeing up your defense and provide an opportunity for further production. Ultimately, it gives you recuperation time to replan your strategy, fortify your defense, and build more advanced weapons for subsequent attack.

The original Pac-Man was developed by Namco and first released in Japan in 1979. In 1980, the classic arcade game was later introduced to the American market. Due to a lukewarm response from Japanese consumers, no one expected it to become a hit in the United States overnight.

In 1982, Atari sought the rights to license and publish Pac-Man for their 2600 console. This gave American consumers an opportunity to play the original arcade game at home. However, a rushed production of the game left much to be desired.

Atari’s adaptation of the original arcade was widely criticized, mainly due to its blinking ghosts and oversimplified graphics. This, in turn, would lead to 5 million unsold cartridges and the slow demise of Atari ― A moment in history that would later be considered a possible trigger for the game crash of 1983.

Pac-Man won the hearts of American consumers and over 350,000 arcades were sold. It stripped Asteroids of its former leading title and merrily went on to become the most popular arcade game in the world.
